Sammy's Six

This post is a long-time coming. Our oldest turned six in February. Since then he has lost his third tooth--a top front one--and I love the jack-o-lantern smile he makes and the little lisp it gives him. We have had an amazing 6 years with our boy and await many many more.

Angry Bird cake.  Yes, I made that little masterpiece.  Chocolate on the inside, mint on the outside (his favorite combo).

All boys should have this Lego vehicle building set.  Nothing but hundreds of pieces to make any and every kind of vehicle your imagination can create.

The long-awaited Hotwheels Shark-Bite Bay.

This is my favorite sequence of shots.  Rip it open face.

From his birth family.  I love them.

Making a silly face.

Making a sillier face.

Congratulations to my big boy.  I can't imagine these last six years without you.

The "Tit"-anic

In the fall of 1998, I took a class creatively named "Comms 330".  I was encouraged to keep a journal of various advertisements, quotes, funny happenings, etc.  During this time, I remember some guys visiting our apartment.  They had brought their friend, also a guy, who was a little, how should I say, flamboyant and also, a lot in love with The Titanic which had come out (forgive the pun) several months before.  With wrists a-flapping and lisps a-lisping, he expounded everything that was virtuous and lovely about the movie and I groaned and groaned and groaned.  At the time, it was like the worst movie ever made--special effects aside.  And that was before the movie Bicentennial Man hit theaters.  Remember that movie?  Be glad you don't.  After he left, I sat down at my desk and feverishly wrote out the following train of thought review:

"The Titanic.  I wholly, utterly, and without reservation, loathe this movie with all that is earnest, intellectual, and sensible in me. . . Allow me to analyze this movie in a nutshell.  Here it goes.

Some really nice explorers are trying to service all mankind by recovering rare artifacts from the ship Titanic.  They know a very valuable necklace exists and are searching earnestly for it.  They learn of a really old chick who might hold the clue to the lost treasure.  She travels to the sight of the sunken ship at the expense of the explorers and insists on bringing all her belongings including her pet fish which only adds to the expenses not to mention the inconveniences.  Then she makes them all listen to her incredibly useless and boring story of her trip aboard the Titanic which doesn't even remotely help the explorers.  Her story tells how she was a really big brat who was a victim to terrible injustices (she had to marry a rich man who wore eyeliner).  Boo hoo.  She meets a boy who gambles and steals but who saves her from just pretending to commit suicide (she wasn't really going to commit suicide, she just wanted some attention, which she gets).  The two fall in lust and exchange lovely words to each other.  The girl then decides to ditch her family and her commitments and succumb to the gambler (who is really only like 10 years old or looks like it).  They take all the money from the girls fiance, but first the little boy has to draw the girl naked so they can get dirty old men to see the movie based on the fact that there is nudity involved.  The two run all over the ship having adulterous sex and leaving their fingerprints everywhere.  Premarital sex is promoted.  The ship hits an iceberg and goes down and there are really cool special effects.  Eyeliner man chains loverBOY downstairs and stupid girl misses her boat so she cans save her true lust from the chains that bind him.  They run through the boat in wet clothing and then eventually jump off.  They grab on to some friendly wood and wait to be saved in the icy water.  Boy drowns and girl blows a whistle.  She survives and makes it to America with eyeliner guy's necklace.  Girl marries someone else whom she remains married to.  After she tells her long story, she chucks the treasure that the explorers were looking for into the ocean.  They come away with nothing and she dies.  She goes to heaven where she greets little boy and they kiss each other and live in heaven forever even though they are both unrepentant adulterers and should go to hell and never mind the husband she was married to all her life and had children with.  Little boy who she only knew for a week or two is much more deserving...after all, he drew her breasts."

One of Those Days

From pretty much the moment I woke up this morning until now--8:33pm (knock on wood), it has been one of those days where I try to accomplish one task, only to turn around and discover 19 other things that had been previously checked off the list are now unchecked.  Nineteen times, oh, I don't know, about 72 extra tasks on top of regular stuff like laundry and cooking and cleaning up after cooking and eating and helping brush hair and teeth and clipping finger and toe nails and wiping bums (you know, the regular mommy stuff) is, what, 1349 extra things to do.  That's a lot of extra things.  By the time afternoon had come around and I had finished some weeding, bark dusting, going ghost busters on the wasps by my front door, redistributing the sand from the sandbox that my children had dispersed all around, and spraying down the back patio, I was getting a little "threadbare" in the patience department (because, there were extras, remember?).  Noelle asked if she could help spray the patio.  Sure.  She full-on super sprayed Ruby, by accident.  So, I began to strip poor, crying Ruby down when I notice Sam coming back outside with a plastic solo cup and I remember he had caught a spider earlier that day and put it in the cup.  "Did you bring that spider into the house!?"  What do you think?  So, I had a little cringing, trying-not-to-come-completely-unhinged, pull-my-hair-out moment when my husband comes in from mowing the front lawn/chit chatting with the next door neighbor/getting ready to leave for work because a patient was really having some pain on a Saturday and says to me, more or less, I should try to work on my patience.  This is true, but it is not what I want to hear at the moment.  Skip all the stuff that happens in the middle.  Note, Noelle got car sick.  All over.  Skip stuff that happens later on.  Finally, Noelle's is in bed, Ruby is in bed, and Sam is snuggling next to me getting ready for bed.  Blood curdling screams from Noelle's room.  Chad walks in and blood curdling screams from Chad.  I get up while Chad runs back to the hallway, grabs the closest puke catcher he can find which is my bucket of cleaning supplies from cleaning the bathroom, upends everything in the bucket and catches most of the vomit, but out falls the spray bottle...of bleach, which of course chooses this precise moment for the nozzle and head to completely fall apart and spill all over the carpet.  More puke clean up, more daughter clean up and carpet clean up (and please oh please don't bleach the carpet).  All this happens right outside the baby's door and now she is crying and Sam won't go to bed and I am ready for the day to be over.  Happy freakin' Saturday.

Here's the Situation . . .

My old computer died.  Yes, I saved things before it died.  It's really dead.  My "new" computer was not working so well.  It made me angry.  It finally got working well.  Now I need to reload everything and then I will post pictures. . . one day.
